Backnang is a town in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg, with a long history. The town was first documented in 1067. In the 12th century, Backnang was endowed by the Margraves of Baden with an Augustinian canonry, making it a religious and cultural center. The Stiftskirche, built around 1130, served not only as a house of worship but also as the burial site for the Margraves of Baden. By the mid-13th century, several members of the margravial family were buried there. The name “Stiftskirche” derives from the canonry and reflects the building’s significance in the town’s history. Near the Stiftskirche is the Stiftshof, which once served as the residence of the Margraves of Baden. Today, the former castle building is used as the Backnang District Court. In the 19th century, tanning was an important economic foundation for Backnang, making the town a significant center of leather processing. Later, in the 20th century, Backnang established itself as a hub for telecommunications, particularly through companies such as ANT and now Tesat-Spacecom and Telent GmbH, which continue to play an important role in the regional economy. For those interested in culture, Backnang offers several institutions. The Technikforum Backnang documents the industrial history of the town, focusing particularly on the development of tanning and telecommunications. Art enthusiasts can visit the Heimat- und Kunstverein’s rooms with the graphic cabinet in the Helferhaus, as well as the Galerie der Stadt Backnang in the former Turmschulhaus with its Gothic tower, which regularly hosts exhibitions of local and regional artists. The Bürgerhaus in the former railway hotel offers a diverse programme. The old town of Backnang, with its well-preserved half-timbered houses, invites a stroll and provides an impression of historical architecture. The Gänsebrunnen, the geese fountain, in the town center is another landmark, referencing the “Geese War” fought by the women of Backnang against the town council.Backnang combines historical significance with modern developments, offering visitors the opportunity to experience both the history and vibrant culture of the town. The four-day Backnang street festival takes place every year on the last weekend in June. It is the oldest and largest street festival in Germany. A varied musical programme is offered on five stages in the town and the clubs offer a large selection of culinary delicacies. During these four days, the town comes alive in a very special way. |
